If you're a small business in Hampshire, Surrey or Berkshire looking for HR help, you've probably noticed there are a lot of options.

Large outsourced HR firms. Helplines. Online templates. Employment law services. Independent consultants.

I'm an independent HR consultant based in Farnborough, right where Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire meet. I work with businesses across all three counties, and remotely across the UK.

In this post, I want to explain what outsourced HR support actually looks like, who it suits, and what to expect if you get in touch.

What is outsourced HR support?

Outsourced HR support means using an external HR professional instead of, or alongside, having your own HR team.

For a lot of small businesses, it's the practical middle ground. You get experienced HR advice when you need it, without the cost of employing someone full time.

It can cover things like:

  • Advice on day-to-day employee issues.

  • Absence, performance and conduct problems.

  • Grievances and disciplinaries.

  • Contracts, policies and staff handbooks.

  • Restructures, redundancies and TUPE.

  • Supporting managers through difficult conversations.

  • Extra HR capacity when your own team is stretched.

Who is it for?

In my experience, it tends to suit three types of business.

Businesses with no HR person at all. Usually the owner, a director or an office manager has been picking up HR alongside everything else. It's worked up to now, but it's starting to feel risky or time-consuming.

Businesses with a small HR team that's stretched. Maybe one HR person who's brilliant but can't be everywhere. Outsourced support can give them backup, a second opinion or extra hands on a project.

Businesses going through change. A restructure, a new HR system or rapid growth. You need experienced help for a period of time, not forever.

Why use a local HR consultant?

A lot of HR support can be done remotely now, and I work with businesses across the UK over Teams.

But there are times when being local helps.

Some conversations are better in person. A tricky meeting. A team that's going through a restructure. A workshop with your managers. Being able to come in, meet people and understand how your business actually works makes a difference.

It also helps to know the local area. Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire have a real mix of businesses. Hospitality, professional services, tech, education, care, manufacturing and lots of growing SMEs.

What's different about working with an independent consultant?

With a large outsourced HR firm, you might speak to a different adviser each time you call.

With an independent consultant, you speak to the same person. Someone who gets to know your business, your people and what's already happened.

I'm CIPD qualified, with more than 15 years in senior HR roles. Most recently I led HR for around 1,300 employees. I've worked across contract catering, hospitality, education and travel, so I've seen a lot of the situations small businesses face.

What I care about is practical advice. Advice that works in the real world, with the time and budget you've actually got.

What happens when you get in touch?

Here's how it usually works.

1. A free 30-minute call. We talk about what's going on and what you need. There's no obligation. Sometimes a single conversation is enough to point you in the right direction.

2. Agreeing what help looks like. If it makes sense to work together, we agree what support you need. That might be help with one issue, a defined project, or ongoing support.

3. Getting on with it. I work alongside you, and your managers if needed, to get things sorted.

I'm not a retained HR service tying you into a long contract. I'd rather be useful when you need me.

What should you have ready for the first call?

You don't need to prepare much. But it helps to think about:

  • Roughly how many people you employ.

  • What's prompting you to look for help now.

  • Any deadlines, like a meeting or a change you need to make.

  • What you already have in place, like contracts or a handbook.

And if you're not sure what you need, that's fine too. Working that out is part of the conversation.

What about HR projects and technology?

Alongside day-to-day HR support, I also help businesses with bigger pieces of work.

That includes HR project management, like implementing a new HR system, restructures or building a staff handbook from scratch.

And increasingly, I help businesses think about how to use AI and technology in HR sensibly. Not everything needs AI. But the right tools can save a lot of time on admin.

What do local businesses usually come to me with?

Every business is different, but a few things come up again and again.

A long-term sickness absence where nobody's sure what to do next. A performance issue that's been drifting for months. A grievance that's arrived out of the blue. Contracts that haven't been updated since the business started.

Growth is another big one. A business that was ten people a couple of years ago is now 40, and the informal way of doing things has stopped working.

And more and more, it's employment law changes. The Employment Rights Act 2025 is bringing in a lot of changes between now and 2027, and small businesses want to know what they actually need to do.

Can you help if we're outside the area?

Yes. Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire are my local patch, but a lot of what I do works just as well over Teams.

Advice, policies, handbooks, project work and my HR AI Review can all be done remotely. So wherever you are in the UK, it's worth a conversation.

Where I've landed

Outsourced HR support isn't one size fits all.

Some businesses need a helpline. Some need a full HR team. But a lot of small and growing businesses in Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire need something in between.

Someone experienced they can call when they need help, who knows their business and gives straight answers.

That's what I try to be.

If you'd like to talk through what's going on in your business, have a look at my HR support or get in touch to book a free 30-minute call.

Frequently asked questions

Which areas do you cover for HR support?

I'm based in Farnborough and work with businesses across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire. I also support businesses across the UK remotely.

Do I have to sign up to a long contract?

No. You can get help with a single issue, a defined project or ongoing support, depending on what you need.

Can you come on site?

Yes, where it helps. Some meetings, workshops and conversations work better in person, particularly across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.

Is there a free consultation?

Yes. I offer a free 30-minute call to talk through what's going on and whether I can help.

Mostly small and growing businesses, but I also support larger organisations with HR projects, HR technology and using AI in HR. If you've got an in-house HR team that needs extra capacity or specialist help, I can work alongside them.
